Tiny Seychelles ideal for idyllic island stopover

The African island nation of Seychelles is everything you ever thought it was: white sand beaches, turquoise waters and arched palm trees that offer a picture-perfect respite from the stresses of life.

Its location in the Indian Ocean, a little more than 900 miles off the coast of Kenya. There is plenty to see, do and not do on the 115-island archipelago and a visit to one or all of the three main islands-Mahe, home to the country’s capital city of Victoria and the main airport: Praslin; and La Digue offers a solid sampling of the laid-back Seychellois way of life, conveniently connected by interisland ferry service.

Colorful colonial architecture, traditional plantation houses, Takamaka Bay rum distillery, updated bar and restaurants can be found on the island.   Nature lovers will find a visit to the Vallee de Mai nature reserve on Praslin Island an interesting and welcome environment. Look for the famous coco de mer palm trees. Giant coconuts are endemic to the Seychelles. Vallee de Mai is a  Unesco World Heritage site and an early morning hike through the untouched palm forest provides a memorable walk through primeval Praslin.

Accommodations are in no shortage. Resorts throughout the island, many of which serve as destinations unto themselves rank amount the islands’ most prestigious properties and deliver beaches, pools, restaurants, series and activities in kind.
