Terminal Tricks`

Stay active and steer clear of bad airport food furing your layover. On any given day, tens of thousand of passengers pass through the nation's airports. Killing time during a layover can bring boredom, and boredom for too many of us, means eating.
Relax: Got you covered with a few strategies to keep you occupied or at least equipped to make some healthy choices.

1. Tank up before takeoff.  Avoid terminal temptations by eating a decent meal before you get to the airport.  Pack yourself a brown bag the night before and eat it on the way.

2. Go on walkabout.  If you're grounded for a few hours and you have plenty of time to wander without fear that you flight will be called, put that time and your legs, to good use. Physicl activity not only squelches boredom and appetitie; it also relieves strees and burns calories.

3. Hit the gym. If your flight is cancelled or you really have time on your hands, more and more airports now feature fitness centers. Home hotels near the airport may even allow travelers to use their workout facilities for a modest fee.

4. Look before landing.  Look for lean protein (think grilled chicken) orpack of nuts like cashews and high fiber (fruits and veggies). They are not that hard to find in airport snack shops and eateries.

Just a note: Security friendly snacks: All food must be wrapped or in a container, and pass through an X-ray machine. You can bring unpeeled fruit or vegetables, even half-eaten foods as long as they're wrapped. Pack protein rich nacks like trail mix, soy nuts and sunflower seeds, along with dried fruit and sturdy fresh fruits, like apples.

Now enjoy?
